Established connector family now suitable for I/O applications

Farnell, the leading multi-channel distributor has announced first stock of Harwin’s 2mm Datamate hi-rel connector family in Europe. The connector and SMT board hardware manufacturer’s new product is now available with single-piece, machined metal backshells that provide screening against RFI and EMI interference. Datamate S-Tek, which is the industry’s lowest cost, shielded hi-rel connector and well-proven in harsh environments, can now be considered for I/O applications as well as PCB-mount designs.

Manufactured in aluminium alloy and nickel plated for electrical performance and corrosion resistance, , Datamate S-Tek backshells ensure full 360 degree electrical shielding when used in conjunction with metal braid . Designed to attach to a wide variety of standard metallic braids using industry standard tools, the connectors allow the shield braid to be connected through the backshell to the PCB ground plane. Available in female cable-to-PCB-mount and cable-to-panel-mount configurations in a range of sizes including 6,10,14,20 and 26 positions, the backshells also provide excellent design flexibility.

Farnell will be providing access to a wide range of data and discussion about the new products via its element14 online community, supporting customer applications, and helping speed time to market for new designs.

“This launch enables electronic design engineers to use Datamate for I/O applications as well as PCB mounted designs, “ said Steve Herd, Farnell’s Head of EMCO Product and Supplier Management. “Farnell is the first distributor to offer its customers the new range of connectors and backshells that will suit many I/O applications in the Military and Aerospace markets, as well as in industrial electronics and control system applications.”

Delivering 55/125/56 (-55 ºC to +125 ºC, 56 day damp heat, steady state) performance levels the new backshells are mechanically strong and easily assembled using industry standard tooling. The Datamate J-Tek connectors also feature jackscrews for added mating security.
