Rutronik presents new Power Topled from Osram with 80 percent higher output

The new Power Topled with lens (SFH 4258S/4259S) from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has an 80 percent higher optical output than the standard version of the infrared LED – despite the same surface area and the same current. This boost comes from a special thin-film chip which, thanks to Nanostack technology, has not just one but two p-n junctions that are grown one on top of the other. The resultant increased range will above all benefit applications in the security sector and in gesture recognition. The new Power Topled is now available at distributor Rutronik.

Apart from the Nanostack chip and the associated higher output the new infrared Power Topled is the same as the standard version and can therefore be used as a simple direct replacement. The package dimensions (footprint) remain the same so existing designs can continue to be used. Because of the series circuit the voltage is higher by about factor 2. The infrared Power Topled produces an optical output of 80mW from an operating current of 70mA – around 80 percent higher than the standard model from the same current. The new LED emits at a wavelength of 850nm and is therefore a good compromise between maximum spectral sensitivity for CCD and CMOS cameras and suppressed visibility for the human eye. It is available with beam angles of +/-15° (SFH 4258S) and +/-25° (SFH 4259S) from two different lens types. The new LED is particularly useful for infrared illumination, especially in security systems. In CCTV applications the range can be increased significantly with the same number of LEDs. The main area of application in the consumer sector involves camera-based gaming as this is where high optical output has the greatest benefit.

Farnell signs exclusive agreement to stock low profile, LED lighting connectors from JAE

Farnell has added three new designs of LED lighting connectors to the range of products it offers from interconnection specialist JAE. The agreement between the two companies, which includes an exclusivity period of six months, will see Farnell become the first European distributor to stock the ES3 series.

Offered in a choice of PCB card edge (Cableless), wire-to-board (cable insertion), and discrete wire clamp formats, the ES3 series provides an efficient method of achieving interconnections between LED mounting PCBs and other circuitry in LED module designs. All three connector formats are manufactured from a durable high temperature resin and are designed for surface mounting.

With a low-profile mounted height of just 1.6mm, ES3 LED lighting connectors are well-suited to space constrained designs. By allowing a cableless design, both the number of parts required and the time to complete assembly can be reduced. ES3 LED lighting connectors are rated to 1A and have an operating temperature range of -40 º C to +105 º C.

The new connectors complement the wide range of solid state lighting products already stocked by Farnell and featured, along with comprehensive supporting information, on the company’s Lighting Solutions microsite.

U-Shaped Connectors Perfect for LED Applications

GradConn Interconnect recently introduced the BB02-xF series U-Shaped thru hole connectors for planar PCB mating with 2.00mm pitch spacing.

These U-Shaped one piece headers are available in single in line or dual in line and provide an economical option for a one piece ‘fit and forget’ solution, either solder direct into the PCB or use a vertical socket on each PCB if access space is tight and retro fitting the connection from above is desirable.

Alternatively plugging to vertical PCB sockets is particularly effective in applications where assembly space is limited allowing headers to be retro fitted after LED lighting strips are in place. The BB02-1F and 2F offer customizable space between pins and pin height. For more information on these and other GradConn products contact Texim Europe.

Digi-Key Corporation Announces Stock of New Molex LED Array Holders

Digi-Key Corporation today announced availability of the Molex Incorporated solderless LED array holders.

Molex has simplified the LED mounting process by offering array holders which eliminate the need for hand or SMT soldering. These LED array holders install quickly into fixtures, enabling replacements in the field and allowing for easy upgrades to current applications.

Features of these high-temperature LED array holders include screw-mount attachment method for securing the array to a heat sink, optional snap-lock optics that provide light source adjustment, and compression contacts that will power the array and eliminate soldering during installation. Serviceability is greatly improved by the releasable wire trap. The array’s small form factor, less than 50.00 mm (1.96”) in diameter for ES arrays and 70.00 by 71.00 mm (2.75 by 2.80”) for RS arrays, makes these array holders ideal for use in lamps and small-fixture applications.

Lumex unveils three new UV LED standard wavelengths at Newark / element14

QuasarBrite UV LEDs outshine CCFLs–offering longer lifespan, superior light performance, 50% cost savings, up to 70% energy consumption savings

Newark, a leading multi-channel, high-service electronics distributor in the Americas, announced today it was stocking the newest QuasarBrite™ UV LED technologies from Lumex, which include three new standard wavelengths.

Lumex states that QuasarBrite UV LEDs provide up to 10 times longer lifespan, up to 50% cost savings, up to 70% energy consumption savings and superior light performance, as compared to alternative technologies like CCFLs.

The RoHS compliant QuasarBrite UV LEDs are now available for same day shipping in standard 355nm (SSL-LXTO46355C), 365nm (SSL-LXTO46365C) and 377nm (SSL-LXTO46375C) wavelengths in a through-hole format. They are ideally suited for a wide range of applications including:

security (counterfeit detection for currency, passports and other travel documents)

forensic (applications related to forensic analysis of bodily fluids)

photo catalyst (for air and water purifier applications in homes, offices and automobiles)

“Previously, widespread use of UV LED technology, especially in the shorter UV wavelengths, was hindered because the materials used in the epoxy LED lens degraded the lifespan of UV LEDs to less than 5,000 hours,” explained Kay Fernandez, Product Technology Manager, Lumex. “Recent technological developments have allowed the epoxy lenses to be replaced by a robust TO-46 package with a glass lens, making it possible for QuasarBrite UVs to last 10 times longer- with life spans of over 50,000 hours.”

“Innovations like these represent our continued commitment to stock the latest technology products for design engineers,” commented Jeff Uden, VP, Product Marketing, Newark. “It will be exciting to see how many uses designers will find for the shorter UV LED wavelengths.”
