MSC now has the new RL78/L1C 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) from Renesas Electronics. The MCUs integrate LCD driver functions, a high-performance 12-bit A/D converter and a USB module that is compliant with the USB Battery Charging (BC) Specification, Revision 1.2.

The devices are available in 80-pin and 100-pin packages with on-chip flash memory capacities ranging from 64KB to 256KB. Furthermore, depending on the function, the devices feature up to 60 percent reduction in operating current compared to earlier Renesas products. During operation when the LCD panel is not being used, the new MCUs even achieve the industry-leading low current consumption of only 0.62µA during 32 kHz clock halt operation.

Thanks to the integrated USB function module, sensor logs and measurements from healthcare equipment can be managed on host equipment or a personal computer using USB communication. Since this module already conforms to the USB BC Specification, Revision 1.2, it can accept a maximum charging current of 1.5A. Therefore, with the new RL78/L1C MCUs, batteries can be charged approximately three times faster than with products that only support the USB 2.0 standard.

Renesas also provides a complete development environment for the new RL78/L1C MCUs. This includes the E1 on-chip debugging emulator and a dedicated Renesas Starter Kit (RSK), which consists of the required development environment at first adoption as well as a support tool for code generation. The various USB drivers (communication class, HID class and mass storage class) required to support rapid charging under the USB BC 1.2 specification can be used in the Renesas e2 studio and the IAR Embedded Workbench development environments. Furthermore, application notes that explain functions such as software touch keys, LCD display, timer functions and serial functions are provided for developers.
