FAR317_Elektra FINAL_HRESInnovative packaging solution receives its fifth best practice award for contribution to environmental sustainability

2010 has been a year of awards for Farnell. The leading multi-channel distributor has won another award for its unique biodegradable packaging, the fifth accolade the company has won in the last nine months.

Developed by Premier Farnell, this innovative packaging has claimed the below awards in 2010:

• April: Environmental Product/Service of the Year at the UK’s Sustainability Live Environment and Energy Award.

• August: Green Organisation’s Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice and Contribution to Sustainability

• September: Electronic Product Design Magazine’s e-Legacy Award

• November: Institute of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Sustainability Innovation Award

• December: Environmental Award at the Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards

The prestigious Elektra Awards give the electronics industry the perfect opportunity to recognise the achievements of individuals and companies across Europe. They are designed to promote best practice in key areas including, innovation, sales growth and employee motivation. From low carbon processes to packaging recycling and remote working, the judges in charge of the Environmental category were looking for companies which have strategies to reduce the impact on the environment of their products, manufacturing processes and commercial practices. Farnell’s innovative packaging won the award by successfully demonstrating how good environmental practice has permeated into all areas of the business.

Commenting on the win, Neil Harrison, President of Farnell Europe, said: “With a very strong focus on sustainability and as the only distributor in the electronics industry to have a comprehensive legislation portal on element14, we certainly lead the way on environmental innovation. These five industry-leading awards are a testament to our sustainable commitments. We have constantly demonstrated our significant focus on sustainability by recycling over 80% of our own waste in the UK, and are working to extend that commitment and assist our customers in reducing the e-waste.”

The packaging, which is capable of breaking down in an industrial composter, or dissolving simply in hot water, uses patented technology, exclusive to Premier Farnell, to fully biodegrade without releasing any harmful chemicals into the environment, while offering the same level of component protection as standard static dissipative bags.
