Mouser Electronics, Inc. today announced that it is stocking Seoul Semiconductor’s Acrich2 LED engines. The Acrich2 LED module is intended to be used in AC powered lighting applications to replace traditional lighting with an LED-based
technology solution. Potential applications include lamps and bulbs, down lights, ceiling lights, and industrial lights.
The Acrich family offers an integrating circuit that controls current flow, power dissipation, and power factor correction to the proper specification. The Acrich family (the first to offer an LED module powered by AC), allows designers to directly drive from an AC source, without AC-DC power conversions, to provide convenience and simplicity.
The Acrich2 delivers a significant boost in technical performance over the first generation Acrich LED engine. The Acrich2 delivers an increase in Power Efficiency and Power Factor Correction (PFC), while simultaneously reducing total harmonic distortion (THD). The Acrich2 incorporates a TRIAC phase-modulating dimmer allowing it be installed in applications previously designed for incandescent lamps. It is available in four distinct power and lumen output ranges (4W, 8W, 12W, 16W). The family will work with all common global AC-voltage ranges. Standard nominal correlated color temperature (CCT) is 3000K (Warm White) with a color rendering index (CRI) of greater than 80.

Premier Farnell plc working in conjunction with the United Bank of Carbon (UBoC), has embarked on a unique and exciting initiative to provide solar powered LED lighting to remote villages and communities in Tanzania. The aim of the programme is ultimately for individual communities to purchase and assemble simple kits of parts to provide an environmentally friendly, cost saving alternative to the liquid fuel based forms of lighting they currently use. The project is in collaboration with Fauna and Flora International and local partner the Tongwe Trust.
At present Premier Farnell is evaluating the supply chain and preparing to ship the first sample kits to a nominated Tanzanian engineering company. It will assess and establish the training that will be required in order for selected residents of remote communities to gain the skills needed to build the kits into finished, working units. Once this stage has been completed, Premier Farnell intends to start shipping large numbers of the kits to Tanzania.
Premier Farnell’s in-house technical team has designed the units that have been optimised for ease of assembly, using own brand parts along with components from some of its leading suppliers. The first kit to be shipped to Tanzania utilises XP Power LED drivers and a range of own-brand Multicomp parts including LED modules, solar panels, batteries, rocker switches and connectors.
UBoC is a collaboration between established, responsible businesses and leading environmental academics and non-governmental organisations who together aim to reduce climate change by protecting the world’s rainforests and their people.
“This is an ambitious and important project that Premier Farnell is ideally positioned to support and drive,” said Charles Denham, Sustainability Manager, Premier Farnell. “Solar powered lighting is the ideal solution for remote village communities and can save them significant cost versus other forms of lighting that use fuels that must be purchased and transported over long distances. The project brings together our technical expertise, product range, drive for innovation and approach to sustainability in a way that delivers benefits to all involved. By helping communities become more self-sufficient and encouraging the use of sustainable sources of energy, there are better prospects for their long-term viability and migration to cities will be reduced.”
“Premier Farnell is bringing vital sustainable technology to 40,000 people looking after 10 million of the planet’s tropical trees,” said Jonathan Wild, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of UBoC. “Quite a project, especially in a remote corner of Tanzania with no roads, no cars, no power lines, no telephones, and hopelessly under-equipped dispensaries and schools. Premier Farnell is clearly demonstrating the social leadership, without which there can be no real business leadership. It is a privilege to be working with such exemplars.”

With the new generation of Oslon SSL LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Rutronik presents a particularly temperature stable light source. The LED provides a luminous flux of typically 98lm in warm white (3,000K), with an operating
current of 350mA at an application temperature of 85°C in the chip. With its typical luminous efficacy of 96lm/W it is among the most efficient 1 mm²-Chip-LEDs presently to be found on the market.
The combination of higher luminous flux and reduced forward voltage of 3.1 V of the new Oslon SSL equals an efficiency increase of approximately 25%, when compared with the previous generation. For manufacturers of lighting solutions, this makes luminaire development much easier: a smaller number of LEDs attains the same luminous flux, as well as the same efficiency as before. The higher temperature stability of its luminous flux, even when operating under “hot” application conditions, significantly simplifies thermal management.
The new Osram Oslon SSL LEDs are available in the light color “warm white” (3,000K), suitable for interior lighting (type EC), for instance in downlights, as well as in “cold white” (5,000K), for use in exterior lighting (type PC). As with the previous products of the Osram Oslon SSL-range, also the new arrivals are available in the small component size of 3mm x 3mm and offer two different lenses.

The innovative illumotion multi-sense system, available from Rutronik as of now, provides an experience of a very special kind. This technically thought-through combination of animated images, high-definition displays and a brilliant multi-channel audio experience opens up the senses. With a affordable expenditure of effort and money it is possible to set virtually any scene and achieve extraordinary effects. Visual experiences can be perfectly enhanced and intensified by means of individually configurable sound and light effects as well as other sensory input such as scents, cooling/warming and the movement of the wind. For instance, synchronised LED lighting considerably reinforces the impression. The scene to be set can very easily be modified according to the desired environment. “This function – the synchronous rendering combined with additional control options – represents an absolute innovation in an affordable range,” points out Nikolai Schnarz, Product Sales Manager at Rutronik. The virtual all-round experience is designed for use in a wide range of settings, from wellness areas and saunas via light and colour therapy practices, doctors’ surgeries, deceleration rooms and hospitals right through to hotels, offices, event gastronomy and so on – our customers can live out their creativity to the full.
The basic components of the multi-sense illumotion system are a theme package, multi-channel audio technology, hardware for the base and control units as well as high-resolution displays, optional LED lighting / sound system and the control unit for all elements. Preconfigured theme packages can be selected from the so-called ‘multi-sense areas’: panorama, ambience, aquaria or art gallery. The 4K technology involved gives viewers a live experience as if they were actually somewhere else. To display the themes, illumotion relies on robust full-HD industrial screens. Using a sophisticated splitting technique the 4K themes are transferred to the displays in synchronised image sections. The customers have a wide range of options to configure their fantasy worlds, such as the number and size of the displays and their placement in the space available, e.g. as a panorama set on the ceiling for an open sky view, as a virtual window or landscape set for breathtaking panoramic scenes, sets in portrait orientation or single displays for static themes. There are no limits to the imagination.
The customers can also select a suitable frame for the view in question from a range of options: There are easily interchangeable front display panels (either square or with a porthole effect), as well as an illuminated tank with real, bubbling water to enhance the impression of an aquarium.
The base unit is fully programmed for lighting, sound and audio. This is the ‘player’ for the themes stored on flashcards. It controls the displays and coordinates them using RFID technology. The autonomous solid-state system (a not PC-based operating system) is immune to both viruses and crashes – and it is almost impossible to operate it incorrectly. As an option, control via WLAN and iPad or iPhone is possible.

The Oslon Square, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ new LED, offers a wide range of possible uses, including designer luminaires for the home or office, retrofits and street lights.
The LED is available in many different versions with different color temperatures. It can be operated with different currents, making it extremely versatile. Its reflective package makes even better use of the light and increases system efficiency in all versions. The Oslon Square is available at distributor Rutronik now.
The Oslon Square measures only 3mm x 3 mm, has a low thermal resistance of 4K/W to 3.8 K/W and is accommodated in a robust package which is suitable for outdoor use. The LED chip is enclosed by a reflective package that reflects light emitted at the side or at the back so that this light is usable. The Oslon Square EC is suitable for indoor applications in which a high quality of light is needed, for example in offices. With a color temperature of 3000K it provides a warm white light and also offers high color stability over a wide viewing angle (120°). The CRI is at least 80.
If the lighting needs to be particularly uniform a “fine-bin” order can be placed for this LED. At an operating current of 700mA it achieves an efficiency of above 90lm/W and a luminous flux of 200lm and more. At 350mA its efficiency passes the 100lm/W mark. The EC version is also suitable for retrofits. Thanks to its small dimensions it can be closely clustered and, like all the LEDs in this series, it benefits from its reflective package, both individually and within a system.
The Oslon Square PC and UW are designed for outdoor applications, i.e. in street lighting. They can be operated on currents of 200mA to 1.5A, making them interesting for other applications such as downlights and spotlights. The LEDs produce a neutral white to cold white light with color temperatures of 4000K and 6000K. And at 130lm/W from 350mA they are even more efficient than the warm white version. With a CRI of at least 70 (4000K) and 65 (6000K) these LEDs combine good quality of light with high efficiency.
