Digi-Key program offers local NCTC students job opportunities, tuition reimbursement
Electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corporation today announced it will once again sponsor the Digi-Key Corporation Sales Internship Program in conjunction with Northland Community and Technical College (NCTC).
This internship program offers college students age 18 and older the opportunity to work at Digi-Key while attending classes. Internship program classes start at the beginning of the 2010-2011 academic year for full-time students who are enrolled at NCTC in Thief River Falls.
The Digi-Key Sales Internship Program allows participants to begin working at Digi-Key as early as June 2010, and provides them with the opportunity to earn income while attending college classes full time. Participants will also receive post-college career assurance in a sales position at Digi-Key and tuition reimbursement up to $5,000 per year of a two-year program, pending fulfillment of internship program requirements.
To be considered eligible for the Digi-Key Sales Internship Program, applicants must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled as incoming students for the 2010 fall semester at NCTC. Applicants must also succeed in the Digi-Key sales internship application/interview process. Additionally, applicants must pursue an approved associate-level business or liberal arts degree or other approved degree at NCTC.
Upon being accepted into the sales internship program, participants will receive eight weeks of inbound sales training from June through August 2010 until the beginning of the academic year. While enrolled in the internship program, participants must maintain a 2.5 grade-point-average (GPA) to be eligible for tuition reimbursement. Participants must also agree to work part-time at Digi-Key while enrolled in the program, maintain satisfactory performance and follow all pertinent company policies. From September 2010 through May 2011, participants will work in a sales capacity approximately 20 hours per week while attending NCTC classes.
Additionally, once a participant has successfully completed his or her degree, he or she must be employed full-time at Digi-Key for one year to be reimbursed 50% of his or her tuition costs up to $5,000. Once the participant has been employed at Digi-Key for two years, he or she may be eligible to receive reimbursement of up to $5,000 of the remaining tuition costs.

New Phoenix Contact PTSM Series PCB Terminal Blocks in Stock at Digi-Key Corporation

The PTSM series has a 5A-rated spring-cage connector and a small footprint that allows for several design possibilities. The terminal blocks are 5mm in height and have a 2.5mm centerline. These parts are available in pin-in-paste method mounting or true surface-mount technology, both of which help engineers save time and money when compared to traditional mounting methods.
Features include a quick push-in connection, cost-saving mounting technology, and optimization of tight spaces. The PTSM series’ small size is valuable in applications in which board space is constrained. The quick push-in technology reduces the amount of time spent on inserting wires when compared to traditional technology.

Digi-Key Corporation Announces Exclusive Global Distribution Deal with EPC
Electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corporation, recognized by design engineers as having the industry’s broadest selection of electronic components available for immediate shipment, today announced it has signed a deal for the global distribution of gallium nitride (GaN)-based power management devices from EPC.
Established in 2007, EPC is a fab-less company with subcontract manufacturing in Taiwan. EPC’s key markets include voltage controllers, LED boost converters, power MOSFET and IGBT replacements, drivers, power amplifiers and RF MOSFETs.
EPC’s founders are committed to developing GaN products to be used as cost-effective silicon product replacements. In June 2009, EPC released the first commercial enhancement-mode GaN transistors. EPC has developed products with behavioral characteristics similar to silicon power MOSFETs to make GaN transistors easy to use.

Digi-Key Corporation hires more employees to maintain customer service levels
Digi-Key Corporation has hired more than 60 people since Jan. 1, 2010, bringing the company’s total number of employees to 2,059 as of Feb. 21, 2010. This hiring increase is in response to increased sales of electronic components following last year’s economic downturn.
“Our projections for 2010 have begun to materialize. We are seeing a significant increase in demand for electronic components and, thus, the number of employees required to meet that demand,” said Mark Larson, Digi-Key’s president and COO. “January was a record sales month for Digi-Key. We have shipped more than 15,000 orders on several dates since the beginning of 2010, and we are on pace to continue this upward trend in sales, number of orders shipped, and number of employees throughout this year.”
The increase in demand for electronic components has caused Digi-Key to ramp up its efforts to quickly process and ship orders. Digi-Key has the capability to process an order from entry to shipping in as little as 15 minutes. More than 99 percent of Digi-Key orders are shipped in less than 24-hours from the time the orders are received.
“We are continually looking for new talent to enhance and improve Digi-Key’s internal processes,” said Rick Trontvet, Digi-Key’s vice president of human resources. “Currently, we are adding staff in many areas to help maintain pace with rapidly rising sales. We expect hiring to continue at this elevated rate into the fourth quarter of this year.”
Since 2002, Digi-Key has created more than 860 jobs. The average age of a current Digi-Key employee is 41 years with an average length of employment at Digi-Key of at least seven years. Approximately 58 percent of Digi-Key’s employees reside in Thief River Falls, Minn. while the remaining 42 percent live in surrounding communities.

The SMP1345 series of PIN diodes, available in the tiny 0402 package, is designed for Low-Noise Block (LNB), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and switch applications from 10MHZ to 6GHz. The SMV1413 series is ideal for use in VCOs that call for tight capacitance tolerances.
