Biodegradable, static dissipative bags to replace millions of polythene equivalents
Farnell, the leading multi-channel, high service distributor has implemented another innovative and environmentally-friendly packaging solution. The company’s new biodegradable, static dissipative bags, which represent a first for the electronics industry, use a unique material that combines static protection for sensitive components with biodegradability.
Developed in collaboration with packaging specialist Antistat, the new packaging is patent-protected and exclusive to Farnell. It will replace the polythene bags currently used to package an estimated 3.6 million components despatched by Farnell in Europe each year.
With a static charge decay of < 0.002s and surface resistivity of < 1×1010 ohms/sq, the new packaging offers the same level of protection as standard ESD packaging but can be disposed of in composting facilities, reducing our impact on the environment. The bags are made using a unique formulation, making them fully biodegradable to the recognised European standard (EN13432) and ensuring no harmful chemicals are released into the environment.
Shaun McCarthy, Director, Action Sustainability Ltd, a not-for-profit social enterprise set up to lead and inspire sustainable procurement, said: “The environmental impact of polythene bags in the consumer market is well documented and visible to us all. The same issues apply to the use of such bags in industry so this commitment to innovative, environmental packaging solutions by Farnell is most welcome. It provides a great example of how businesses can address and meet their environmental responsibilities.”
The new packaging demonstrates how Farnell is making a difference in the world through a commitment to innovation and the environment. This latest innovation forms part of a suite of protective packaging solutions available from Farnell and follows the success of the company’s Peel Packaging, launched last year to offer a unique way of providing complete protection for sensitive ICs. To maximise the environmental benefit of biodegradable, static dissipative bags, the company is now working with specialist packaging supplier Antistat to extend their use to other component packaging types and to make the bags available for others in the electronic component industry.
Commenting on the development and introduction of the biodegradable, static dissipative bags Paul Horton, Supply Chain Director, Farnell Europe said: “As a company involved in the handling of huge quantities of product, we take our responsibilities to use environmentally friendly packaging very seriously and are dedicated to making a difference to the communities in which we operate. This latest innovation will enable us to significantly reduce the environmental impact of our business and shows the leading role we are taking in the electronics industry in considering the environment and sustainability.”
