Buildings services get Energy Efficiency boost

Online Energy RSource Centre launches to keep buildings ‘green & lean’

RS Components, Europe’s leading distributor of electronic, electrical and industrial components, has today launched the RS Energy RSource Centre at rswww.com/energyRSource, offering both expert advice and practical guidance on energy efficiency to buildings services and facilities management professionals.

The ‘one-stop-shop’ RS Energy RSource centre is designed to simplify energy efficiency legislation and help buildings services professionals improve their ability to deliver compliant and lower cost energy efficiency measures with short term returns.

For expert advice and independent information the Energy RSource centre features a complete legislation timeline, ‘Ask the Expert’ request, facts and figures and the option of a full energy survey. And to translate energy strategy into real efficiency returns, the portal also offers practical guidance on which products to specify and install through 3D lighting and facilities walk-through models, a Light Energy Saver calculator tool and a full range of energy efficient products including lighting, heating & plumbing, control & metering, test & measurement, insulation, IT and renewable energy, with many displaying a ‘green pound’ symbol to highlight their energy efficient credentials.

“Energy efficiency is a serious challenge for the buildings services industry as it struggles to reduce cost and comply with complex and extensive legislation,” comments Neil Harrison, marketing development manager at RS Components. “There is a lot of information out there, but finding the right resources and then making the right choices on how to deliver a compliant, energy efficient building solution is a labour-intensive and often, under-researched inefficient process in itself. We’ve launched the Energy RSource centre to bring everything buildings services and FM professionals need to know under one roof to simplify their lives and help them make more informed energy decisions.”

The Energy RSource Centre will be updated with the latest energy efficiency news, legislation and industry information to keep visitors up to date. The portal will also offer case studies and events across the industry to share best practice with other energy efficiency professionals. The website will go live on 26th May 2009 and can be found at rswww.com/energyRSource.

RS Components launches online hub specifically aimed at purchasers

Online hub from RS

It is a buyer’s market and RS Components, the global suppliers of electronic, electrical, electromechanical and industrial components, has today launched an online hub specifically aimed at Purchasers (rswww.com/purchasing). It is a one stop shop for expert advice, pricing information, market news, best practice and ways to save money.

Research carried out by RS Components with its customers revealed that purchasing managers found it difficult and time consuming to collate information before placing an order, costing their respective companies thousands of pounds in lost time.

RS Components saw a gap in the market for somewhere Purchasers could go to find out everything they needed in order to make the smartest purchase.

‘We are really happy to be launching our hub aimed specifically at the purchasing community. It offers expert advice, e-Solutions, best practice and how to reduce costs -saving money, all in one place. It is an initiative which the market has been crying out for but which no one, until now, has provided,’ says Lee Kilminster, Customer Programme Manager for Purchasing, at RS Components.

You can visit the hub at rswww.com/purchasing

RS Components achieves Carbon Trust Standard

Europe-leading energy efficiency distributor reduces carbon footprint by a minimum of 2.5% over three years

RS Components, Europe’s leading distributor of electronic, electrical and industrial components, was today awarded the Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) at the highest level. The Standard is an objective benchmark that assesses and accredits an organisation’s commitment to climate change. To achieve it, RS reduced its carbon footprint by a minimum of 2.5% over three years.

The Carbon Trust Standard, issued by the Carbon Trust, is awarded to organisations that proactively measure, manage and reduce their carbon footprint within stringent guidelines. The Standard measures electricity and gas consumption, on-site energy consumption (including heating and cooling), fuel consumption, fugitive emissions, emissions from business transport, as well as the organisation’s internal and external programmes to promote energy efficiency. To date, less than 100 companies in the UK have met its requirements, and even less have achieved the more difficult level two certification. RS Components is the first distributor of electronic and electrical components to acquire the level two Standard.

To maximise its organisational energy efficiency, RS replaced 1,382 light bulbs at its Corby headquarters with energy efficient lamps. Over three years, this resulted in a saving of 345.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions from lighting alone.* From 2011, the estimated 5,000 UK companies impacted by the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), RS included, will be mandated to purchase CRC allowances to cover emissions for each year. It is expected that these allowances will be costed at £12 per tonne of CO2. Based on this fee, RS has reduced the amount it will need to spend on allowances by £4,146 for lighting alone.

“Energy efficient products are a huge part of our business, and it’s very important to us that we practice what we preach,” said Paul Quested, General Manager, RS Components. “We’re immensely proud of the professionalism and expertise of our staff across the board to both deliver and advise on best practice for buildings and facilities management. “The Standard is recognition for all the hard work we’ve put into making our business as environmentally responsible and as energy efficient as possible. It assures our customers that when they come to us for advice on how to make their own business more energy efficient, we completely understand their needs as we’ve been through the process ourselves,” Quested continued.

Ian Taylor, an assessor for the Carbon Trust, added: “RS Components have good carbon management practices and are determined to achieve continuous improvement in this area. The company has invested in terms of management time and capital money, and this has delivered carbon savings. The staff and management involved in the operating efficiency of the business are professional and committed to reducing carbon emissions.

“Although much has been achieved already, there are still many opportunities for investment and improvement. The gaining of the CTS will further promote the fact that improving carbon efficiency is essential in a modern business.”

* Calculation based on the replacement of halogen lights with Megaman CFL GU 10 energy efficient lamps. Lifetime emissions from an energy efficient lamp equate to 70 kilograms of CO2. Lifetime emissions of a halogen lamp equate to 320 kilograms of CO2.
